Expensive whisky is rarely "on offer" in the traditional sense of the word. Producers police recommended prices, distributors defend their margins, and shops are keener to adjust the pricing of run-of-the-mill blends than of an 18-year-old Speyside from a Sherry Butt. The market, however, is not perfect — and it is precisely in that imperfection that the most interesting price differences lie.
The 500–1000 PLN range is the segment where the price differences between shops can be the largest in absolute terms. On a bottle costing 150 PLN, shops may differ by perhaps 20 PLN. On a bottle costing 750 PLN, it can be 100–150 PLN. That's a different scale, and a different potential gain from comparing.
How do we select the bottles for the under-1000-PLN page?
The whisky under 1000 PLN with the best value-for-money page features bottles that meet three conditions at once:
- The price falls within the 500–1000 PLN range — the top shelf, without going bankrupt.
- Available in at least four shops — so we have a credible "typical price" (median) to
compare against, not a conclusion drawn from two offers.
- The cheapest shop's price is clearly below the median (by 12–45%) — and offers more than
+40% above the typical price are excluded from the median, so a single overpriced or mis-matched listing can't inflate it and fake a deal.
In other words: we're not simply looking for expensive whisky. We're looking for whisky that someone is currently selling below its market value — which, at this price level, means a real difference.
Why is this segment interesting?
Rarity has its price, but the market levels it out slowly
Single malts aged 18–21 years, bottlings from renowned distilleries, independent bottlers with small runs — these are products whose price in Poland can differ between shops by as much as 20%. A shop that bought its last batch a few months ago may still be selling at the old price while the competition has already raised theirs.
Stock rotation
Shops rarely want to hold expensive stock for too long. A bottle costing 800 PLN sitting on the shelf for months ties up capital — which translates into a greater willingness to price competitively in order to make room for new arrivals.
Exchange-rate differences and bulk deliveries
Some Polish shops buy from foreign wholesalers. When the pound or euro exchange rate jumps, a shop that bought its stock earlier may temporarily sell below the price paid by one that has just bought a new batch.
What to look out for when choosing?
Check the price history. WhiskyPolska tracks prices over time — before you decide, check whether a low price is really a change, or whether the shop always asked for that much and another has simply joined in at a higher price.
Don't ignore delivery costs. On a bottle costing 700 PLN, a difference in delivery cost (15 vs 25 PLN) is barely 1.4% — but it's worth taking into account when comparing.
Verify stock availability. Price differences in this segment can disappear quickly. The data on WhiskyPolska is refreshed regularly, but if a bottle is available in just one shop, it may be gone tomorrow.
How often do clear price differences appear?
From observing our database, in the 500–1000 PLN category at any given moment there are usually 10–25 bottles with visible price differences — that's how many meet the criteria described. That's fewer than in the under-500-PLN segment (where the market is more fluid), but for each of them we're talking about a potential difference of several dozen, or more than a hundred, PLN.
It's worth checking back regularly, because the list changes with every scraping cycle — shops change their prices several times a week.
