Tomasz Miler needs no introduction in the Polish spirits world. A biotechnologist by training, author of the milerpije.pl blog, a charismatic influencer and the creator of the acclaimed MILER Spirits potato vodka, he has shaped tasting culture in Poland for years. Yet for true devotees of the "water of life", the most fascinating chapter of his work unfolds in independent bottling.
As an Independent Bottler, Miler proves that cask selection is an art demanding not only a superb palate but also deep technical knowledge.
Selection philosophy: Single Cask and Cask Strength
Tomasz Miler's work as an independent bottler under the MILER Spirits banner is defined by an uncompromising approach to quality. Like the great Scottish bottling houses, Miler skips the compromises of commercial releases – his whiskies are Single Cask (drawn from one specific cask), bottled at Cask Strength, non-chill-filtered and without caramel colouring.
In the world of IBs, courage in the search for unique flavour profiles is everything. Miler does not chase safe profiles meant to please everyone. He picks distillates that express the character of a given distillery to the fullest, often heightened by unconventional finishing.
Key MILER Spirits bottlings
Miler's portfolio of independent bottlings features distillates from respected Scottish regions, matured in carefully selected, active first-fill casks. Wood quality plays first fiddle here. Among the most iconic and talked-about releases:
- Blair Athol 14 YO (First Fill Fino Sherry, 58,7%) – A bold, uncompromising release from a rarely seen dry Fino sherry cask. Instead of the expected heavy sweetness it strikes with intense acidity, notes of tobacco, leather, pickled lime and wax. A profoundly tasting-led dram showing the technical evolution of the spirit.
- Craigellachie 11 YO (First Fill Ribera del Duero, 56,1%) – Brilliant finishing in a cask that held the powerful Spanish red of the Ribera del Duero region. Craigellachie's rich, oily distillery character gained deep notes of ripe plum, apricot and tobacco, with a distinctive waxy-saline finish.
- Glen Garioch 13 YO (First Fill Amontillado Sherry, 56%) – A deep bow to Highland tradition in the rare setting of Amontillado sherry. Expect ripe orchard fruit, walnuts, leathery notes and salted caramel.
- Bunnahabhain 12 YO (First Fill Bourbon Cask, 57,7%) – A treat for smoke lovers. Though Bunnahabhain is best known for its unpeated style, Miler chose a heavily peated, medicinal, salty version matured in bourbon, dominated by honeyed peat, bonfire and sea salt.
- Linkwood 12 YO (First Fill Bourbon Cask, 55,1%) – Distilled in June 2012 and bottled in late 2024, from a Speyside distillery legendary among blenders. Just 266 bottles of pure, dessert-like elegance. The active first-fill bourbon cask gave it a remarkably volatile, vanilla character, where icing sugar and buttery pastries interlace with grassy, floral notes. The finish reveals deep chocolate accents — a beautifully balanced dram for those seeking lightness paired with the powerful structure of cask strength.
- Benrinnes 13 YO (First Fill Oloroso Sherry, 55,2%) – 291 bottles from a distillery famed for its traditional copper worm tubs, which lend the spirit a unique, heavy, “meaty” character. Miler sealed this powerful distillate in a first-class Andalusian Oloroso sherry cask. The result? An exceptionally dense, dark and oily whisky full of dried fruit, Christmas cake, raisins, figs and dessert chocolate, countered by intriguing deep herbal-spice accents and a subtly earthy, cellar-like background.
Democratising knowledge: Miler Tasting Club
Responding to the Polish market – where buying several full bottles of cask-strength Single Cask is a serious outlay – Tomasz Miler brought the idea of independent bottling down to the micro level. The Miler Tasting Club project (releasing curated miniature sets, e.g. No. 1 from a late-2025 bottling) lets enthusiasts compare side by side how different first-fill casks (Fino, Amontillado, Bourbon, Ribera del Duero) shape varied distillates. This unique, educational approach sets MILER Spirits apart from traditional distributors.
The WhiskyPolska.pl view: As an Independent Bottler, Tomasz Miler brings to the Polish market a breath of authentic, craft-spirited distillation in the Scottish style. His bottlings are not mass products – they are limited series of a few hundred bottles, for people who look for more than repeatability in whisky. These are drams that demand an analytical approach and conversation over the glass.
