The global cash and carry franchise sells its own whisky under the Glengannon label.

The first Makro store was opened in Amsterdam in 1968 by SHV Holdings, which was founded in 1896. During the 1970s and 1980s, the company expanded to other European countries, as well as opening stores in South Africa, Asia, and North and South America. In 1989, Makro stores in the United States were sold to Kmart, which converted them to Pace Membership Warehouses. Makro’s stores are operated under franchise agreement, by a spectrum of different operators around the world, the largest of which are Metro Group (25 countries including Germany and Netherlands under the Metro and Makro banners) and Booker Group (UK).
